The color analysis, also called color harmony , or personal color analysis , Seasonal Color Analysis or skin tone matching , is a term often used in the industry cosmetics and of the fashion to describe a method for determining the colors of clothing and makeup that harmonize with the complexion of the skin, the eye color and a person's hair color, with the added benefit of being able to use this tool for wardrobe planning and style consulting.

Color analysis shows how certain shades can be flattering or, on the contrary, unflattering by observing the optical illusions that occur on the face when placing specific colors next to the individual. It is believed that the wrong colors will draw attention to flaws such as wrinkles or uneven skin tone, while the right colors will enhance the individual's natural beauty.

The practical application of a color analysis will theoretically allow the individual to coordinate their clothing and accessories with greater ease and avoid costly mistakes by purchasing items that do not fit into their specific color palette. However, color analysis has continued to be problematic and controversial due to the lack of standard training or degree required to qualify as a color analyst. Seasonal analysis attempts to place individual coloration into the tonal groups of “Winter,” “Spring,” “Summer,” and “Fall” or their sub-variants. However, the approach can vary greatly between schools of thought. Some color analysis systems classify an individual’s personal combination of hair color, eye color, and skin tone using labels that refer to the “temperature” of a color (cool blue vs. warm yellow) and the degree of contrast of hair, skin, and eye colors. Cosmetic colors are often determined by hair or eye color alone.
